Apple iPhone 13 Mini review: Understandable

The Mini series of iPhones continues to receive considerable acclaim in the mobile world, in particular thanks to a format, the one under 6 ″ , which Android has now totally abandoned. It is a market with strong demand that unfortunately the various manufacturers such as Xiaomi, OnePlus, Samsung have left aside, despite the fact that there are many users who prefer compact and functional smartphones instead. iPhone 13 Mini therefore occupies a meager segment in which it manages to be the undisputed king of the market all too easily, even despite the flaws and improvable aspects that distinguish it.

Apple in style, as usual

Without a doubt this is one of the elements that characterizes all the iPhone series of all time: a recognizable design , with premium materials and built to perfection . Thanks to the 5.4 ″ display and the weight of 140g, it feels like holding a miniature iPhone in your hand. The aluminum side frame , the rear glass and the ceramic screen protector give it a premium feeling that is difficult to find on other models and in the Android world, thanks to an attention to detail that emerges clearly from unboxing . . As already seen in the review of the iPhone 13, the colors available to the user are among the most beautiful available on the market: galaxy, midnight, blue, pink and Product Red (the one in our possession).

The contrast between the anodized aluminum and the gloss of the body make the red color probably the most beautiful among those available, without considering the fact that a small share will be allocated to the Global Fund to fight COVID-19 . But back to the dimensions: 131.5 x 64.2 x 7.65mm, compact at the right point to make it still usable and enjoyable even for multimedia viewing, but convenient to keep in your pocket or for those who appreciate small devices more. Personally I did not find myself too well with this model, preferring the normal version precisely because of the too large hands for the Mini model, but all in all the user range it is aimed at is exclusive, given that finding other devices with 5 displays ″ Is currently very difficult. Unfortunately, the sharp and decisive edges become quite uncomfortable with prolonged use (much better the rounded edges that characterize most Android devices), but using a protective case this will tend to be less evident. We close this section with theIP68 certification , which allows the iPhone to be waterproof according to the IEC 60529 standard.

Super Retina? Nice, but not the best

The display has always been a source of pride for the Apple ecosystem. The panels used have managed to be deeply appreciated in every context, from the multimedia one to the working one in the world of graphics. And the iPhone series is no exception . This year, Apple unveiled a  display for next-generation iPhones, called Super Retina XDR with OLED technology . Excellent resolution, with 2340 × 1080 pixels at 476 ppi, which make it extremely appreciable both in terms of color range and calibration, and in terms of the enjoyment of the panel in daily use. Yet there are flaws, which are difficult to overcome for those coming from the Android world, a little less for Apple users who are loyal to the brand.

First of all, the Notch, even if reduced in size compared to iPhone 12, still represents a major limitation in the use of the screen and the notification bar , which currently cannot yet show any notifications, in addition to the system default ones. Furthermore, the refresh rate , despite the update to ProMotion of the 13 Pro series, remained at 60Hz , effectively limiting its use and not returning the additional fluidity that we find in most 90Hz and 120Hz devices on the Android market. . On the other hand, the touch and brightness management are excellent, with a maximum peak of 1200nits, which makes the screen extremely visible even in direct sunlight.

iOS 15, too small a step forward

Let’s face it, Apple has been focusing on an integration between apps, hardware and software at the limit of perfection for years , at least according to the collective imagination it has created around its image. And actually the performance of the software is not bad at all. However, much more could be done and iOS 15 , although it promises many innovations, in reality it has not brought many changes to the user interface or novelties in use, if not the management of Siri , Picture-in-picture and App Library . In addition to these small changes, either for the recent release, or for an optimization that is struggling to arrive, iOS 15 did not seem so fluid and functional to me, especially from the point of view of an Android user. In many transitions it is possible to notice small slowdowns and there are also system bugs , such as that of the non-configuration of the account on the Cloud during the first configuration of the system, or of the continuous disconnection in the transfer of photos to Windows. Long-time users will likely feel at home and some functions might actually be handy, but nothing revolutionary is on the horizon, especially given the lack of a fingerprint recognition sensor. FaceID works, and it does it very well, but in this situation where the mask is still mandatory in many places, the software fails to recognize the device, forcing us to constantly use the unlocking with the PIN, annoying and now almost fallen into disuse.

Yes, the charger is still separate

Although Apple has kicked off the dance with this trend, bringing with it some other competitor models, in reality we continue to think that the charger is a fundamental and essential element for the use of the smartphone and its functions. For an Android user like me, finding an iPhone compatible charger wasn’t easy and caused me more than a few headaches.

The integrated battery has improved , we do not know if in the capacity, but at least in its autonomy for sure. The step forward compared to the previous model is huge, and if previously the battery was a problem, at this moment it is certainly easier to get to the end of the day. During the stress day we used streaming on Netflix and Disney +, 3 push mails, Telegram, Whatsapp, classic social networks, web browsing and some calls: we arrived until the evening with 10-15% of battery with 5 hours of screen on.. Not bad considering the size of this iPhone 13 Mini, but all in all nothing surprising, given the compact size of the screen and the 60Hz refresh rate. Moving on to recharging, we are still at a maximum support for 20W chargers : almost two hours to recharge it from 0 to 100% , not very immediate in this 2021 given the presentation by the competition of the new 120W 15-20 minute recharges. There is also support for MagSafe wireless charging up to 15 watts and Qi up to 7.5 watts.

A15 Bionic, the icing on the cake

Usually the chips developed by Apple compete in a separate category: it will be for the software optimization that helps in this field, but it is undeniable that the power generated by these chipsets helps to optimally manage any type of app or game . The new A15 Bionic chip with 6 ‑ cores , including 2 performance and 4 efficiency , the new quad ‑ core GPU and the 16 ‑ core Neural Engine allow for incredible performance. In this respect, there is no reason to complain, since the new chipset also manages to be very efficient in consumption. 5G technologies are also present on board (sub-6GHz ), Gigabit LTE with MIMO 4 × 4 and LAA , Wi ‑ Fi 6 ( 802.11ax ) with MIMO 2 × 2 and Bluetooth 5.0 , including NFC chip and GPS tracking system with GLONASS, Galileo, QZSS and BeiDou integrated. In short, a complete package that updates the new generation iPhones to the latest technological standards of the mobile world.

Portraits from reflex

The camera side is the one that surprises most of the iPhones. And this 13 Mini is no exception . Thanks to the same module present on the older brother (iPhone 13), the rendering of the photos, with the integrated 12MP sensor is excellent. Whether it’s lighting management, HDR, but also focus and colors, we are faced with photographs that leave you speechless. But what is most striking is above all the ease of use : if in the Android world there are dozens of modes, manual and non-manual settings, selectors, with iOS it will be enough to tap the shutter button without worrying about anything.

Even the homogeneous color calibration of the three cameras on board (two rear and one front) manages to create a continuous line with no obvious differences between the various photos. I myself can assure you that actually, apart from a small difference in calibration and color tone, the yield in normal photos can be compared without problems to that of a high-end Android device : in fact, where the software manages to work miracles is in the rendering of portraits and selfies . Skin tone, skin tone, blurry background with bokeh, the warmth of the photo are just some of the elements that allow us to enjoy photographs and portraits in person that can make a difference in the mobile world. Even the front camera, thanks to the 12MP sensor, has an excellent yield in selfies , undoubtedly comparable to the yield of the lens and the rear sensor. Actually nothing new compared to the previous generation, if not from a single point of view: that of night mode. At night the shots are sharper, better exposed and the focus and shutter time has improved a lot with this new 13 series . The noise and flare rendering have also improved, for a tangible difference (perhaps the only one compared to the iPhone 12) at first glance.
