Can You Use 2 Different Vision Insurance Plans?

No law prohibits you from having two health mutuals. However, you cannot be reimbursed twice for the same medical act. In the case of specific needs, it is rather recommended to take out individual or collective health insurance as the main contract, and additional health insurance to cover less frequent expenses.

HAVING 2 MUTUALS: THE RULES TO FOLLOW

You can take out two mutual health insurance plans in your name. Nothing forbids you. However, you should know that:

  • You can declare only one mutual health insurance so that you are not reimbursed twice for the same medical act.
  • The amount reimbursed to you by social security and your two mutual insurance companies cannot exceed the amount of your health expenditure.

For example: if you change your eyeglasses for a total amount of €300, the amount reimbursed by your two mutual insurance companies cannot exceed €300 minus the reimbursement of the Sécu. If your cover is complete on optical expenses, your first mutual will reimburse you part (or all) of the sum remaining at your expense, the second will take over to arrive at the sum of 300 euros.

THE DISADVANTAGES OF HAVING 2 MUTUALS

When you take out two complementary health contracts, you can certainly benefit from higher reimbursements, but is it advantageous?

  • You have to pay two mutual contributions, which may not be the most interesting calculation, financially speaking
  • You are probably paying duplicate guarantees. The two mutuals probably provide the same medical procedures, at different levels of reimbursement. Since you cannot be reimbursed for more than the amount of the medical procedure, you are probably paying twice for similar guarantees.
  • The electronic transmission of medical acts can only be carried out to a single mutual insurance company. You will therefore have to send the reimbursement statement from the 1st mutual to your second mutual, most often by post. You will be reimbursed later.

Rather than signing two mutual health insurance contracts, we recommend that you choose a mutual health insurance company with greater guarantees: its price will in most cases be lower than the combination of two mutual health insurance companies.

If you benefit from compulsory mutual insurance (a company mutual for example, or your spouse’s compulsory mutual insurance company), and you wish to benefit from higher reimbursements for specific medical procedures, in optics or dental, for example, you should then take out supplementary health insurance.

Your main compulsory health insurance would then reimburse you for basic medical procedures (drugs, consultation with the general practitioner, etc.), and your additional health insurance would cover the consultations poorly reimbursed by your compulsory health insurance

SUPPLEMENTARY HEALTH INSURANCE: AN ALTERNATIVE TO 2 MUTUAL INSURANCE CONTRACTS

Supplementary health insurance is a product that specifically meets the need for greater reimbursements when your main mutual insurance company offers reimbursement rates that are too low. It is a product that is particularly suitable if you benefit from compulsory low-cost company mutual insurance, which only covers the minimum healthcare basket.

Supplementary health insurance by some insurers and mutuals. Because the intervenes in addition to your mutual health insurance, by taking charge of larger reimbursements on poorly reimbursed areas such as optics or dental.

The price of supplementary health insurance takes into account the reimbursements you already receive from your compulsory mutual insurance company, which is not the case if you have two traditional mutual insurance companies. You do not pay twice for the same guarantee.

CHOOSE A HEALTH INSURANCE OF BETTER QUALITY

If you do not wish to benefit from a complementary health supplement, or if your current contract does not authorize the addition of a complementary health supplement for a better quality of reimbursement, then choose a better mutual insurance company!

You can cancel your mutual health insurance in the event of a change in your situation or when your contract expires. Choosing a mutual that reimburses you better and that meets your new needs will in any case be more economical than paying for two health mutuals.

We advise you to compare mutuals and health insurances: in less than two minutes, you define your needs and you obtain a detailed mutual comparison presenting you with the best contracts that meet your needs.
