Motorcycle overhaul: when it expires and how much it costs

Motorcycle overhaul, also known as testing, is a mandatory and necessary procedure provided for by the Highway Code.

The motorcycle overhaul consists of a series of checks established by law that make the motorcycle suitable for circulation.

The following are checked: the mechanical, braking, and electrical systems, the structure of the wheels and tires, the level of polluting emissions and noise. Everything is filmed and transmitted in real-time to the Civil Motorization of the area of competence to avoid scams. In this regard, the chassis number and plate are used to identify the vehicle.

The cost of overhauling for motorcycles has risen slightly over the past year and those who will overhaul in 2022 will notice small differences. Furthermore, it varies if it is carried out at the DMV or in authorized workshops.

Pay close attention to the deadline: circulating with the revision expired could incur fines ranging from 173 to 694 euros.

When to do the motorcycle review: deadlines 2022

Inspection of mopeds and motorcycles must be done four years after the first registration and within the month in which the circulation certificate was issued. Thereafter it must be carried out every two years.

The motorcycle overhaul due in 2022 involves:

  • motorcycles and mopeds that have last been overhauled in 2020;
  • motorcycles and mopeds that were registered in 2018.

If in the first revision the expiry date refers to the month in which the movement certificate was issued, for the subsequent ones, expiring in the two years, the month similar to the last revision must be considered.

Let’s assume that a motorcycle was registered in 2018 and the registration card or certificate was delivered on June 20, it will have to be checked by June 30, 2022. The next, after two years, by June 30, 2024. If you are aware of not being able to revise the deadline, it is advisable to bring the date forward rather than postpone it.

How much time can I circulate with the overdue revision?

With the revision expired it is not possible to circulate, regarding this article 80 of the Highway Code is quite clear: circulation is allowed only until the last day useful for revising.

Circulating without overhauling the motorcycle could entail not only a financial penalty between 173 and 695 euros, but the figure could double if the motorcycle has not been subjected to multiple overhauls. If the prohibition is not respected, you could also incur administrative detention of the motorcycle for 90 days.

In addition to what has already been said, if a police check ascertains that the motorcycle does not have an overhaul, it will be seized immediately. Another risk is that if the non-overhauled motorcycle is involved in an accident, the insurance could claim compensation for any damages from the other driver.

Having said that, better pay attention to this important deadline, the costs for the revision are really low and guarantee you to circulate safely.

The cost of the motorcycle overhaul 2022

The cost of the motorcycle overhaul for 2022 sees a slight increase already applied at the end of the previous year. The price varies if you want to do it at the civilian motorization or in authorized inspection centers and workshops.
