Psychosocial Disability And The NDIS

What Is the NDIS?

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a support program started by the Australian government to help people with any significant or permanent disability live as independently as possible. It was legislated in the year 2013 and started operating in 2020. This program aims to help its participants reach their goals and build independent lives for themselves. It also aims to reduce the amount of support each participant needs, so they start living on their own terms and stop being dependent on anyone.

Support Under the NDIS

NDIS provides a wide range of support services to its participants. Depending on their needs, participants can access all the support with the help of service providers. Some of the support services funded under NDIS are as follows:

  • Assistance with daily living
  • Transport
  • Assistive technology
  • Improved relationships
  • Finding & keeping a job
  • Improved health and well-being
  • Short-term accommodation
  • Individualised living options
  • Occupational therapy
  • Speech therapy

NDIS provides funding for these services in the plan. Once the application is approved, the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) conducts an in-person meeting with the participants to discuss the goals and the support they need. Participants can also request the support they think is necessary for their well-being. NDIA assesses their request to identify the importance of requested support and allows the funding.

Mental Health And NDIS

Physical disabilities are not the only type of disability that is funded under NDIS. This program gives just as much importance to psychological disorders. There are many participants who face a psychological disability, and the NDIS provides sufficient support and funds to help them overcome their challenges.

Psychological disability is a term used for a disability that arises from a mental disorder. Every mental health issue cannot be considered a psychological disability. Each disorder has varying degrees of severity, and it’s the same with mental health disorders. People who are affected by their mental health issues for the long term are considered to have a psychological disability and can benefit from NDIS.

This program provides funding for multiple therapies that enable the participants to function properly and cope with their symptoms. Participants can access those therapies with the help of their service providers. They are connected to make therapy providers and are responsible for providing the best possible option to the participants so they can make better decisions.

As an NDIS participant with a psychological disorder, you must pay for regular doctor and therapist visits. Support workers help you keep a record of your treatment and manage your appointments so you don’t end up missing something and your therapist knows the details of your treatments.

What Is NDIS Responsible For?

When NDIS provides you with the required funding for the services, it makes a promise to help you with certain things. It provides a sufficient amount of support to help you function properly in your daily life, take part in community activities, and regain your confidence by taking the lead in your life. You must meet the criteria for funding under NDIS guidelines, and after that, NDIS will provide efficient support to ensure that you get better with time and meet your goals.

Psychological Recovery-Oriented Framework

NDIS is committed to making independent living possible for every participant and aims to provide the same quality services to participants with psychological issues. The Psychological Recovery-Oriented Framework is developed to make sure that NDIS is responsive to the participants with psychological needs and their families.

Need Psychological Support?

Being a new participant, you might find it challenging to understand NDIS completely. You need to hire a registered service provider to help you fight the psychological disability, and the NDIS provides you with all the necessary support to have that.
