Central Wisconsin Mutual Insurance Company was formed as the result of a merger between Flyway Mutual Insurance Company and South Central Mutual Insurance Company on January 1, 2021. We are confident that our combined efforts will allow us to provide even better insurance products and service to our policyholders. Town Mutuals were born out of necessity. In the mid to late 1800’s, farmers could not afford to purchase property insurance on their residence, personal property and outbuildings due to the high premiums charged. Stock insurance companies felt that if a farm fire started, it would most likely be a total loss due to the time it took the fire department to arrive on scene. It was for this reason they were reluctant to insure farm property. To form a company, 25 farmers were needed to insure each other’s losses. During this period many local insurance companies started up throughout Wisconsin. At one time there were over 300 companies. They were called Town Mutuals. They only insured for fire coverage.
