IELTS Listening Test

Overview of the IELTS Listening Section

The listening section of the academic and general IELTS exams is the same. It should be done on the same day along with reading and writing tests. There are four native English language recordings that you should listen to and answer the following questions. In total, there are 40 questions and a time limit of 30 minutes. In the Listening section of the paper test, you have an additional 10 minutes at the end of the test to transfer your answers from the questionnaire to the answer sheet. Records Vary Depending On The Content And Topic:

  • Record 1 – a conversation between two people that is established on a daily social basis, e.g. trip organization.
  • Record 2 – a monologue placed on a daily social basis, e.g. talking about local facilities.
  • Record 3 – Conversations of up to four people on an educational or training basis, e.g. a university teacher and a student discussing the assignment.
  • Record 4 – a monologue on an educational topic, e.g. university lectures.

IELTS Listening Section – Question Types

Multi-Choice Questions

MCQ are the most common questions. Three possible answer options (A, B and C) are presented for the question and you must choose the correct option.

You can also suggest the beginning of a sentence and ask to choose from 3 possible options on how to complete the given sentence.

Remember to read the questions carefully, as the types of “choose more than one option” questions are also designed to deceive the examiner.

Plan, Map, Chart Marking

You need to listen to the description of the place and connect it with its visual images. You will be given a map, plan or chart to label.

Adaptation

This type of question evaluates your ability to match a list of numbers from audio to a set of options on a question sheet.

Execution of Sentence

You should fill in the blanks of the given sentence by reading a set of statements that summarize the basic information from the whole audio or part of it. For this task, a word restriction (e.g., no more than two words) is usually given. Be careful not to overdo it.

The Type of Short Answer

You will be asked to read the question and then write a short answer using the information from the audio. The word limit can be mentioned and if it is exceeded, it will result in a fine.

Form, Note, Table, Diagram, Summary Filling

You have tested the ability to pay attention to the presented details and recognize the main ideas of the audio clip. Make sure your answer stays within the word range.
